A fun weekend ahead

Hey everyone!

I am a big fan of of video games, and e-sports. The video game industry is one which has been growing steadily, especially in the area of competitive gaming, known as e-sports. One of the reasons for this growth has been the use of social media to promote these games. Just by looking at youtube's homepage, one can often find a video of a game.

Video Game Industry Statistics

One of the reasons why I started my blog today is that there is a tournament going on this weekend, which is being broadcasted online available for anyone to view for free on mlgpro.com. This being the main platform for the broadcast, it illustrates how reliant e-sports is on the use of social media for its development. For those of you who might not be as familiar with e-sports, here is an interesting video talking a bit about the history, growth, and future of the industry.

To be honest, I actually find myself in the past few months, watching more games than actually playing them myself. I get drawn in as a spectator, just like I do when watching my favourite basketball team play, or football team. It has probably become the main reason why I use websites such as youtube, justin.tv, or even facebook, to get news of my favourite teams, players, and often even have the chance to chat, and interact with them. So, i guess my main question for the day is, is there someone that you follow on twitter, or facebook or any other social network, and engage with, and why?

HAHAHA i love how you're just SO into 'e-sports' lol i've never heard of this term until you used it the other day in class.
I follow quite a few blogs lol but they're all about 'make up and beauty' or 'food blogs' hahhaa i love looking at these blogs cuz everything is so pretty and hahaha i think sometimes when buying a beauty product it's nice to read other bloggers reviews because i think they're more genuine than what is said in advertisements :)

  2. Like Daiz, I had know idea this had such a following?! Ho do you get on as a competitor Ivan? In respect to who I follow, I've got a good mate who's hoping to move into tv presenting and I try and keep up with what he's doing, which he makes easy through the use of twitter, LinkedIn and facebook.

  3. I worked with the guys at THQ on a few product launches. I have never had so much fun. Gamers Rock. Hung out in a hummer with Erin McNaught from Cyber Shack. I agree with your post I spent hours on You Tube a few months ago watching games and their graphics.

  5. @Daiz - I totally agree with you. I have certain people that I follow, just to watch their reviews, especially if you find someone who you tend to agree with more often than not. I am probably going to go deeper into this in one of my later blog posts.

@Hubba - I have never competed in a tournament myself, as I don't have the time to practice as often as many of these players, which is partly why i spend a lot of my free time just watching them play. In regards to your friend, I hope he makes it. But I think it also brings up an interesting argument of tv vs. social media. I find myself watching more things online, and rarely watching TV, especially since most of the TV shows I like can be found online.

@B More Social - I am extremely jealous! What games did you spend most of your time watching? One of the great things I find about the gaming community is how actively game developers use social media, to interact with their community and change the games in accordance with their suggestions and complaints. Out of interest, where you involved in a social media aspect of a product launch?

@Paulette - Thanks! Great to see more fans out there. I am more of an Xbox and PC fan myself. =D
